How high can they go?
« on: September 08, 2015, 12:19:42 AM »
My lottie mate Stephen Parry has this season answered the question of how high the Aeron Purple Star will go if unrestricted. He added an extension of another 8 foot bamboo cane to the 8 foot ones used in his bean row - just to see how far they would climb. He picked two plants at random in the middle of the row & instead of nipping out the growing tips when they reached the top of the normal 8 foot canes he added another cane of the same length & just let them carry on. Tonight the two of us measured the eventual height achieved - I can report that one has reached an incredible 17' 3"! It may actually grow a few more inches, but we assume that it will now slow down considerably given where we are in the season.

So for now the height is just over SEVENTEEN FEET! Perhaps you would like to conduct a similar experiment yourselves next season and we'll see who will eventually hold the record. I keep on warning growers that they are vigorous! Maybe they should have been called "JACK'S Purple Star" beans  :-)snigger

Here's a photo I took last Saturday of my No. 3 son Alex & his little six year old son, my grandson Cai. Alex stands at 6' 4" - just to give you an idea of scale.

Reaching for the sky! (Having run out of cane to climb).

Your post was in September 2015 scary. Out of interest, did you give it a go in 2016?

Time to throw the doors open to a Chat-Shed competition.

THE APS CHALLENGE

We could have several categories - all supported with photos:

Longest Beans
Tallest/longest plant
Most Seeds per Pod

What could the prizes be?
