First orders for APS beans for 2016 season
« on: July 25, 2015, 11:03:56 AM »
Out of interest to the 'regulars' on here, I've received the first two requests for my Aeron Purple Star beans for the 2016 season. I'm increasingly getting more requests from the US and the first two requests for next season have come from Beatrice, New England & Burbank City, Illinois in the USA.

To date my beans have been sent to:
All countries in the UK (the bulk of requests obviously)
Australia
New Zealand
South Africa
Dominican Republic
Sweden
Denmark
France
Canada
USA (second highest No. of requests)

It seems the Scandinavians are keen on runner beans, but requests from mainland Europe are quite sparse. The interest seems to be in the English speaking ex 'colonies'. Probably something to do with Google English language searches.

Nearly 3,000 bean seeds were distrubuted to amateur growers for the 2015 season. The average No. of beans per request was 12.

Those APS's are really getting around  ;), I picked my first vine ripened pods for seed yesterday, only 3 pods so far but it is early days.  I've had quite a few requesting seed so it will depend on how much seed I get as to how many seeds they actually get, right now I'm thinking  8-10. I've been telling the folks on Garden Web how much I like this runner so I imagine some of the U.S. requests have come from that. The devil made me do it Grin2:-)

I don't have a long trellis of these but they have produced well for me, they did finally slow down for a week or so in the heat wave but are back to flowering again. We've only had two good feeds so far as I've left most for seed but we do have at least 2-3 months of decent growing conditions ahead of us so what the flowers produce now we're going to eat ;D.

Grin2:-) My beans have started to catch up now and are steadily climbing up the sticks. (Had to tell em off and untangle them as some of them were climbing up the wrong sticks)

If you're the Devil's servant - then THANKS Annette! You've obviously driven a few Yanks into the ranks of the Aeron Purple Star club!

Did you enjoy what you've eaten so far?

They look strong & very healthy Dave - no reason why you shouldn't get a bountiful crop from those, after all it's only the end of July and they'll probably carry on cropping into November if Jack Frost doesn't visit early.

Very true (software assisted translations are not an exact science) - but you could have got away with it amongst the monoglots!

Here's an accurate Welsh translation:
"Seren Borffor Aeron"

Here's Google translate's effort:
"Aeron Porffor Star"
Not quite the same is it? Basically because the software can't determine the difference between a proper noun and an adjective - so it's got the syntax wrong and totally failed with the soft mutation of 'porffor' (purple) to 'borffor'. Maybe in the future  :-)snigger

On the home page of the 'Shed' you'll see the board shown below. Just click on the graphic I've posted below - it has a link to the request page. Alternatively you could ask your Dad for a handful in the autumn (he's my star core stock grower - excuse the pun!).

Well I've discovered something that definitely are NOT  'picky' about APS and Cherokee Trail of tears beans.

I went down to the lottie this afternoon to gather up a selection for tea only to find that about a dozen of our chickens had abused their free range privileges and raided the allotment, stripping ALL the young, tender beans at stretched neck height from the frames before tucking into several courgettes...why can't they just eat the slugs and weeds?!?! Angry:-{
