Rhiwgoch CHUTNEY

'Rhiwgoch' is the area where I live in the seaside town of Aberaeron. (It means 'Redhill' in English).


Rhiwgoch CHUTNEY

You'll need -

A large pan, such as a jam pan or large heavy based saucepan
A small square of gauze and some string
8 x 1lb jars.

Ingredients

1.5 lb Plums
8oz Tomatoes (Red or Green)
8oz Onions
1.5 lbs Cooking Apples (after coring)
1lb Stoned Raisins
4oz Preserved Ginger (in syrup)
0.25 oz Garlic (finely chopped)
1pt Malt Vinegar
1.5 lbs Demerara Sugar
1 tbsp Salt
0.25 oz Whole Diced Chilli Peppers (optional)

Preparation

Wash and halve the plums to remove the stones then chop plums in half again.
Roughly chop the tomatoes.
Put the plums and tomatoes in the pan.
Coarsely mince the onions, apples and raising (or put in food processor) and add to the pan along with the garlic, vinegar, sugar and salt.
Tie the chillies in the gauze and suspend the bag from the pan handle (if you want the chutney to be a bit more spicy).
Cook very slowly for 1.5 hours or until most of the liquid has evaporated i.e. when a groove made on the surface doesn’t fill immediately, stirring occasionally to avoid the mixture sticking to the bottom the saucepan and gently prod the gauze bag.
Pot the chutney whilst still hot into sterilised jars. Seal with paper discs and tight lids.
Store for a few months before eating.


If you don't enjoy that I'd get a taste bud transplant arranged with your doctor if I were you!!  :o

Oh Boy! That has got me salivating because it is a new recipe to me and we love our chitney. I just can't wait to put this one through it's paces next year.

I'm gonna try this one. I recon this could be interesting with damsons instead of plums. Mmmmmm looking forward to this.

Being the big hearted soul that I am I've included it to please all of you suicidal garlic lovers. Me? My Rhiwgoch Chutney for my own consumption follows a slightly different list of ingredients. After all who am I to foist my views on you garlic addicts?  No "Gotchas" Tommo - 'Devil's Food' never passes my lips! Grin2:-)

However the reaction from you lot proves my theory that the effect on the brain through taking 'Devil's Food' makes people react in strange ways, due to the impact it has on the hemispheres of their grey matter. Just like the effects of Toxoplasmosis on those affected by that parasite (where rats snuggle up to cats and are sexually aroused when they smell cat's urine) - 'Devil's Food'  makes the victim react in uncharacteristic ways. It seems to heighten people's fierce opposintion to anyone who dares utter a word against it. Far better under those dire circumstances to play along with the afflicted rather than cause grief by upsetting them with the exclusion of their craved for poison in the recipe!!
