This year's meat stock
« on: May 17, 2017, 11:13:51 PM »

Off to collect 4 Oxford Sandy and Black weaners tomorrow nice and early. That'll be the Saturnalia feast sorted in December.

Forgot to mention a couple of weeks ago that we have also taken on 4 Poll Dorset lambs. Usual scenario of orphans...not due to deceased ewes but when a ewe has triplets, one is taken off her so that the two remaining lambs have plenty of milk. The third ( called the orphan ) is sold off cheaply and has to be bottle reared. We are one jump ahead this time as we have acquired a 'Shepherdess' ad-lib feeder where the lambs can take milk as they would with their natural mothers.

Sure they drink more but the benefits really show. Satisfied, stress free lambs.

Sounds idyllic Tommo. Nothing typifies a small holding like watching 'pet' lambs feeding from a bottle.

Ah the old 'Oxford Plum Pudding' pig! A REALLY old breed that - in fact one of the oldest native breeds in Britain I think, at least that's what I read somewhere a long time ago. It's from the same line as Tamworth & other Berkshire breeds isn't it?

A classic hardy and docile old breed - almost a shame to eat them!
